This simple game takes less than five minutes, and it’s a great way to bring a little farm-style enrichment into your living room.
- Ask your dog to wait in another room.
- Hide five small treats around one room of your house.
- Release your dog with the cue, “Find it!”
- Let them search using only their nose.
- Resist the urge to help — let your dog solve the puzzle!
As your dog gets the hang of it, hide the treats in trickier spots. You’ll be amazed how quickly they level up.

A dog’s sense of smell is extraordinary. While humans have about 6 million scent receptors, dogs have up to 300 million, depending on the breed. That’s why scent games are such a powerful — and satisfying — form of enrichment.

When your dog is working through a puzzle, avoid stepping in too quickly.
Giving them time to think, experiment, and succeed on their own builds confidence and encourages independent problem-solving. Then celebrate the win with plenty of praise when they figure it out!
